MechanicalPump Head Calculator
Calculate total dynamic head for a pump from static, friction, and pressure components.
When to use this calculator
Use when specifying a pump duty point for a new system.
Required inputs
- Static head
- Friction losses
- Pressure head
- Velocity head
Expected outputs
- Total dynamic head
- Hydraulic power
Formula overview
All head terms are in meters of fluid (m).
TDH = h_static + h_friction + h_pressure + h_velocity.Worked example
Example: h_static = 20 m, h_friction = 8 m, h_pressure = 5 m, h_velocity ≈ 0.3 m
TDH = 20 + 8 + 5 + 0.3 = 33.3 m.Common mistakes
- Forgetting to convert terminal pressure into fluid head before summing.
- Calculating friction loss only for pipes, ignoring fittings and valves.
